It’s hard to say no to a road trip adventure down the coast. Actually, to any adventure that involves traveling and escaping the city. It’s been exactly a month since we returned from our 14 months of traveling and to be honest, it is not easy to adjust back into the city life.
Straight back into our full times jobs, we were impatiently awaiting the October long weekend. With no plan, no bookings, no bed yet in our newly bought van, we packed an air mattress, camp cooking gear, a few bottles of wine, the surf boards and headed south.
Waking up by the waves
Kendalls Beach was our first stop and we couldn’t have picked a better location. We parked the van right next to Kendalls on the Beach campground in a quite spot right in front of the beach. Cooked lunch, watched sunset, drank wine and fell assleep to the sound of the ocean.
Besides the many quiet beaches, you can also walk to nearby Kiama lighthouse for incredible views, visit the Blowhole where water is bursting out of the rocks, watch for whales and dolphins, and visit a few local cafes or pubs.
Searching for a surf
Our second day we were headed for 7 mile beach to search for some waves, though we took the coast road and didn’t make it past the beautiful town of Gerringong. Werri beach, a long curve of golden sand finishing with a picture perfect point break and man made ocean pools for swimming. Again we found a great spot to park the van for the night just outside of the town but still close enough to walk to the pubs and wake up with the surf at our doorstep.
Exploring 7 miles of Paradise
7 mile Beach is literally 7 miles of pure paradise. Seems like a never ending beach and worth taking the time to explore it. Head south towards Gerroa where you’ll find great views, a campground and some good surf with no one around.

Hiking Kiama Heights
Kiama Heights has been forever one of our favourite spots in NSW. Massive green cliffs lining the ocean gives you the feeling you are somewhere in Ireland. If you up for a hiking adventure take on the Gerrigong to Kiama Coastal Walk. A 5 hour return coastal hike with stunning views, green hills and rugged ocean.
It’s amazing that this is all less than two hours drive from the bustling city of Sydney.
Budget tips:
Its rare in Australia to find a perfect beach car park without the dreaded ‘No Camping’ signs, but the south coast is super quiet and we weren’t the only ones setting up camp for free with no signs to be found. Beware it’s definitly not permitted everywhere, especially state and national parks. If you’re unsure,look out for the no camping signs, ask a local or other campers. If there are signs, make sure to obey them and follow our little trick we learnt in North America, aim for residential areas or smaller hidden beaches. Don’t draw attention to yourself and respect the local neighbours and you won’t have any trouble free camping your way around the country.
