Our Sydney escape during the Easter long weekend took us a little further south and also away from the coast. We had 4 full days so we set out to explore more and discover new places.
The plan was to head way down the NSW South Coast, almost as far as the VIC border, exploring new beaches and towns along the way. Than turning west to the Snowy Mountains to climb Mt. Kosciuszko and search for wild horses.
The last few years we’ve absolutely fallen in love with the NSW South coast. Less crowds on the beaches, less traffic on the highway and the scenery is just spectacular. So far though, we had only been as far south as Jervis Bay, and there are still many kilometres of beautiful empty beaches and sleepy coastal towns to explore. Leaving Sydney on Thursday night we arrived at our “local” Werri Beach near Gerringong. This place is our secret spot, well maybe not only ours, but still super peaceful and quiet. We park our van on the southern headland, next to other fellow camper vans, set up our cheese & dips platter, open the wine and watch the stars above. The next morning was even better. Waking up by the ocean, an early swim and fresh cooked breakfast with the million-dollar view. This is exactly why we love traveling in a campervan.

After a surf and chillin at Werri beach for the morning we made our way down towards Batemans Bay, to Murramang National Park. This area had been recommended to us as a spot with tropical vegetation, beautiful empty beaches and kangaroos hanging out on the sand. We arrived at Depot Beach, there was at least 20 roos hoping around and no sight of any other humans. That night we parked our van in front of the river mouth at South Durras and watched the sunset colours set on the blue waters in front of us. The following morning swimming here in the nice calm, fresh and a little crisp, waters of the river mouth was a great wake up. And of course Kangaroos coming by to say good morning.

On the way to the mountains we passed a few little country villages. Worth the stop was a little town called Mogo. It’s an old Gold mining town though now a cute little village with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants and a good place to break the journey. Bodalla is another cute town where we stopped to restock our supplies at the Bodalla Cheese Factory. Before we left the coast we stopped for one more swim at a stunning secluded beach south Of Batemans Bay. We won’t give the name away or we might have some unhappy locals after us but from what we saw, it’s only one of many world class beaches in the area. After 2 days we felt like a much needed shower so our choice fell to Snowy River Holiday Park where we enjoyed chatting to other travellers and made the best homemade mushroom burger (recipe coming soon). With the chill of the mountain air, we were thankful for a hot shower and a camp fire.

Mt. Kosciuszko, Australia
Hiking Mt. Kosciuszko was our next planned adventure. From Thredbo we took the chair lift to the top of the resort and then started hiking the highest mountain in mainland Australia. A surprisingly easy trek with spectacular views and you don’t have to be a seriously fit hiker to tick it off your list. The trip wouldn’t be completed without seeing wild horses, we’ve talked about seeing them for ages. We found a free camp ground in Kosciusko National park down a long dusty road near Long Plain. A beautifully natural set up in the country side where we collected fire wood from fallen Eucalyptus trees for our camp fire. Our final morning and we headed to the lake to search for brumbies. And there they were. Grazing not far from the lake were around 20 beautiful wild horses. It was amazing watching these wild animals in such a beautiful natural setting. The last stop of our trip was visiting hot springs at Yarrangobilly Caves. It was actually a pretty warm day so the thought of Hot springs wasn’t that appealing though it turns out they aren’t actually hot, just natural springs that are 27 degrees year round. So it was the perfect temperature to cool off and we were absolutely lucky that we were the only 2 people in the entire pool.
This trip, in our opinions, is the perfect getaway from Sydney. A mixture of beaches, mountains, hiking and nature. We also passed loads of wineries and many more great beaches and little towns, so to add on a few more days this would be a fantastic week long holiday.
